Chapter Nineteen
He had an idea of where to find Rowan, but used a detection spellcraft form, and he began to activate glyphs. He figured that if nothing else, Rowan would be prepared for the possibility that somebody might be coming. And he was pleasantly surprised to see that she had done just that.
He hadnât gone far before she stepped out from behind a building, holding on to what he suspected was a spellcraft form, readying an attack.
âLaric?â
He smiled, turning to her. âItâs me.â
âYou know, it took you an awful long time to get here. My father has been quite difficult since we returned. Iveris has been standing up to him, but sheâs also a little concerned about doing that because I think she isnât as confident in what she can do.â
âAs confident as you?â
He didnât mean it to be an insult, but she crossed her arms, seeming to take it that way.
âIâm sorry, Rowan. You know I didnât mean that.â
âI know.â She took a deep breath and let it out. âAll right.â
He waited, but she headed deeper into town.
âWhere are you going?â
âI told you, Iâm going to go get my sister. Iâm not going to leave her here.â
Laric didnât say anything, but then again, he didnât really need to. He understood why Rowan would want to get her sister, even though it was for a different reason than Laric himself would want to get his own sister. Whereas he and Joselle didnât have anybodyâor at least, they had not thought they had anybody left until Dizarn and their cousins had shown upâRowan and Iveris needed each other because of how their father treated them.
In a way, it surprised him that they would continue to go back to him, though perhaps it shouldnât. Wouldnât he go home if his family was still there, regardless of what he had been through when his parents had been alive? His father had not always been kind, and his motherâ¦
Laric tried not to think about his mother and what she had been likeâand, for that matter, what he had not known about her.
But if he had the opportunity, he knew what he would do. He would have gone home gladly. Despite everything, despite how they had treated him, he would have gone home.
He and Rowan made their way through the streets. Everything around him felt so normal, which seemed like a good thing. It meant that the mages had not begun to press through the town or cause additional problems, though a part of him feared that would change.
By the time they reached the general store, Rowan flicked her gaze around, a bit of uncertainty in her eyes. She looked back at him, twisting the fabric of her shirt.
âHeâs not going to be pleased with this,â she said. She seemed to be saying it mostly to herself, and then she took a deep breath, drawing herself up. âBut I have already told him that Iâm not going to put up with any of his crap again, so heâs going to have to just deal with me.
